Subtropical Performance-Testbed for Innovative Energy Research in Buildings(SPINLab)

Entrusted by BOE, MOEA, ITRI has built an “Subtropical Performance-Testbed for Innovative eNergy Research in Buildings Laboratory, SPIN Lab” at Shalun Smart Green Energy City in Tainan. Its whole-testbed-rotatable characteristic provides different orientation testing possibility. Users can implement different building materials, construction technologies, equipment, systems, and control strategies into this testbed according to their testing needs, test and validate the energy efficiency, thermal and visual comfort performance, and IAQ. In the long run, this facility will play a significant role for building technology research, product’s performance validation, simulation tool validation, and building code update.

Features
  • 360-degree rotatable: SPIN Lab is a 360-degree rotating testbed with a unique solar tracking operating mode. This characteristic provides the flexibility for users to customize their testing orientation, and evaluates the effects of different building and solar directions.
  • Two identical testing chambers: SPIN Lab has two identical cells, a reference cell and a test cell, allowing side-by-side tests at the same time for comparing different technology scenarios.
  • A highly flexible testbed: SPIN Lab is a highly flexible testbed. Sidewalls, façade glasses, skylights, ceilings, and partition walls can be customized and replaced to different materials according to testing needs.
  • Highly accurate measurement data: SPIN Lab provides inclusive and reliable sensing, controlling, and data acquisition systems for users to evaluate any product’s energy efficiency, thermal comfort, visual comfort, ventilation rate, and IAQ performances.
  • A unique testing facility: SPIN Lab is the first rotating testing facility in subtropical zone and the third one in the world.
Service
  • Any products, such as building materials, construction technologies, equipment, appliances, systems, and control strategies, can be implemented and tested individually or as an integrated system in SPIN Lab to validate their performances or to evaluate their interactions.
  • For any products, metrics such as energy efficiency, lighting quality, visual comfort, thermal comfort, ventilation rate or IAQ, will be measured to verify the product’s performance.
  • Tests can be highly-customized based on products’ features and users’ needs.
Benefit
  • A performance validation tool for manufacturers: SPIN Lab tests provide products’ performance validation and optimization opportunities for manufacturers during their product development period.
  • A decision making tool for industry, official, university, and research fields: Tests can be conducted in SPIN Lab to evaluate the impacts and the feasibility of building energy codes, policies, measures and standards.
